Book 8 opened with the Fort Stockton Group just over the New Mexico border, holding a teleconference with General Hogan and the Texas Leadership team, after seeing the buildup of enemy forces in and around Austin with the RFID apps they’d just received. The decision was made to move the leadership team out of the State Capitol in civilian cars. They made it safely to Kip Hendrix’s bunker, which was out of harm’s way.

The DPS patrol boaters and their new friends from San Marcos were on their way to South Padre Island. Jefferson had a copy of the RFID apps, and watched enemy movements. Wallis suggested that Richardson attempt to recruit Hector, Gerald, and Roberto to man a patrol boat. Richardson talked to them, and they agreed to join. Madison, Hannah, and Lita suggested that they also join, since they all knew how to operate the weapons. They got the okay and drove to Brownsville. The new base was there, housed in the old US Customs building next to the Rio Grande.

The Texas Leadership team pulled off a covert evacuation of the State Capitol, sending a National Guard team to replace the state workers, disguised as civilians. Word came to them that General Hogan had been captured by the enemy. There was discussion about ending the New Mexico mission, but the team decided to stay focused on it. After the meeting, Nelson collapsed from stress.

The Fort Stockton group made a stop in Ruidoso, New Mexico. While they were setting up camp, members of the Mescalero Indian Tribe showed up. They discussed a non-aggression pact that Saladin had made with the tribe, which was sizeable at four thousand warriors. Stanton Hunt, the tribe’s security lead, found out that General Hogan was involved with the operations in New Mexico. He was very close friends with General Hogan, and was visibly shaken when Jason told him General Hogan had been captured. Stanton vowed to discuss the situation with the tribal council, and confirmed what the Fort Stockton group saw on the apps–there was a large enemy supply depot at Holloman Air Force base, manned by many enemy fighters. The group decided to scout the Air Force Base during the first evening in Ruidoso.

Thirty thousand enemy fighters gathered around the Texas State Capitol in Austin, thinking that Governor Nelson and the leadership team was still there. Civilians in the area began to notice and spread the word, starting a social media blitz. Messages were sent out in the Comanche tongue, translated by a program developed by a citizen. The recruitment effort went viral. Several thousand National Guard troops were inside the Capitol building. The attack started, the National Guard putting up a valiant defense, but they couldn’t hold back the enemy for long. Just as the last few National Guard troops were killed in the rotunda, the area was flooded with seventy thousand armed citizens, rushing across the lawn to the Capitol, killing all the enemy fighters.

Brownsville came under attack, enemy artillery striking from Matamoros, across the Rio Grande. The DPS team survived, watching from hotel room windows as Raptors and B-1 Bombers attacked the enemy. They were ordered to report to the new base at six am the next morning.

A Fort Stockton scouting team watched the enemy supply depot at Holloman Air Force Base from ridges above, witnessing a troop caravan stop and get ammo from a row of Quonset huts. They were seen and fired upon, so they moved to a position with more cover. The decision was made to attack the supply buildings and leave before the enemy could engage them. Mortars were used for the attack along with the M19 grenade launchers on their vehicles. The supply buildings were destroyed, the enemy coming at them with everything they had, the scouting team returning fire with machine guns and grenades. They barely escaped.

Stanton Hunt came to the Ruidoso RV Park to meet privately with Jason, telling him that the enemy was very upset about the attack on their supply depot. A meeting was set up with twelve of their leaders. Stanton told Jason that his group needed to leave right away, so they wouldn’t be seen by the enemy as they traveled to the Mescalero Reservation. Jason took the advice, and the Fort Stockton group left town in a rush. While they were on the road, Carrie was watching the apps, and saw several hundred enemy fighters heading for the Mescalero Reservation. Jason called Stanton to warn him, and the tribe ambushed the enemy troops. This convinced the tribe to join forces with the Fort Stockton Group. They planned to get together on the demolition job–destruction of the I-25 bridges over the Rio Grande near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.

The DPS patrol boat team went to the Brownsville base early in the morning and received their new boats. They went on a shake-down and training mission right away, cruising the Rio Grande. It didn’t take long for action to erupt, as enemy fighters on both sides of the river tried to take out the boats. The DPS won the first skirmish, losing one boat. The remaining boats headed for home and got attacked again, by a larger enemy force than the first, who had gathered to attack the base. The boat that Roberto, Hector, and Kris were on was destroyed, killing all of them. Gerald got shot in the head while piloting Richardson’s boat. The rest of the group were ordered to flee to the south by Jefferson, who was trying to hold off the enemy using a mini-gun mounted on the roof of the US Customs building.

A social media operation by Don and Sydney rallied volunteers in Las Cruces, New Mexico, who blew bridges there, shutting down that part of the roadway. On the way to the I-25 target, the Fort Stockton team realized that bridges on Highway 187 could be used as a secondary route, so they blew those bridges with cannon shots, then continued south to the main target. The enemy forces who had moved further south turned around after the Las Cruces bridges were blown. Both groups raced to get to the I-25 target area.

Richardson couldn’t raise Jefferson after they stopped at a location south of Brownsville, so he called Director Wallis, who told him that Jefferson and the others at the base were killed. Wallis told Richardson to take the two remaining boats all the way to the South Padre Island base. Richardson’s team got there safely and met Harley, the base commander. Richardson got buzzed by the short-range app right away. He took Harley to a rooftop deck and told him the four contractors working the base setup were enemy plants, showing him the apps and explaining what had been happening. They used the communications system compromised by the contractors to send misinformation about a troop surge. The ruse worked, leading to the death of many enemy fight
ers near the Brownsville base where Jefferson was killed. Later they tried another ruse. The enemy plants were ordered to attack Richardson’s team as a result, killing the three men Harley had with him. Richardson realized what was happening. He and his men killed all four contractors. They put them into carts and pulled them around the docks to simulate life with the moving RFID chips. Harley broke into the lead contractor’s cellphone and used text messages to send more faulty information to enemy leadership. The enemy fell for Harley’s messages and pulled most of their men away from the target area on I-25.

Governor Nelson’s team noticed a huge caravan of vehicles moving west from Ruidoso on Highway 70, towards the target area. They couldn’t tell who they were, and sent the drones closer to get pictures, which showed a multitude of civilian vehicles on the road, obviously the Mescalero tribe. They were half an hour behind the enemy fighters who were racing north to shore up the targeted bridges on I-25.

The Fort Stockton Group arrived at the bridges, finding the enemy well dug in. The enemy attacked, the patriots returning fire with their M19 grenade launchers as the tanks maneuvered into position to hit the bridge struts. The bridges were strong, the first strut taking too many shots to come down, and Jason was afraid that the tanks would run out of ammo before they finished. Enemy fighters continued rushing towards the area, firing on the patriots, wounding Moe and taking out one of the mortar teams. The tanks concentrated fire, all three hitting the same strut at once, bringing down the northbound bridge. One of the tanks was hit as the enemy tried to flank them on either side. Jason and the others were running low on ammo, so Curt and Eric raced back to Amanda’s bobtail to get more. When they got there, they found Amanda missing and the truck blown up. The remaining tanks blew the southbound bridge, but the team was about to get overrun by the enemy. The Mescalero tribe showed up just in the nick of time, killing all the enemy fighters. With the battle won, most of the core team took off to help find Amanda. Jason saw that Moe had died of his wounds, Clancy kneeling next to him in tears.

  Chapter 1 - Allies

Jason looked at the Indian Warriors standing on the ruined bridges over the Rio Grande, south of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The battle was won, but Jason was worried sick. Amanda was taken by the Islamists during the battle, and his best people were now in pursuit.

A battered pickup truck raced towards Jason. He recognized it right away. It was the truck that Stanton Hunt was in when they first met in Ruidoso.

“Jason,” Stanton said, smiling as he got out of the cab. Several warriors jumped out of the bed, and White Eagle got out of the passenger side of the cab.

“You guys saved our bacon,” Jason said, shaking hands warmly with all the men. “Thank you.”

“No, thank you,” Stanton said. “That alliance would’ve destroyed us. It was only a matter of time.”

“Took them trying to doublecross us to convince me,” White Eagle said. “I’m sorry.”

“No apology necessary,” Jason said. “You were looking out for your people.”

“You look worried, and most of your fighters are gone already,” Stanton said as he looked around.

“One of our women was taken by the enemy,” Jason said. “She was with the ammo truck, several hundred yards behind our lines. The others are chasing them now.”

“Oh, no,” Stanton said. “I hope they can rescue her.”

  “Me too,” White Eagle said.

  “So, what now?” Jason asked.

“How long are you in New Mexico?” Stanton asked.

“Long enough to make sure that the enemy routes through New Mexico are completely wiped out,” Jason said.

“We’d like to join you,” Stanton said. “If you’ll have us.”

“I was hoping you’d say that,” Jason said. “Joining with us will get you a benefit we haven’t talked about yet. It’s top secret. We have to keep the enemy from knowing about it.”

“Oh, really,” White Eagle said, looking unconvinced.

“Let him talk,” Stanton said. “He can count on us to keep the secret, correct, White Eagle?”

  White Eagle nodded yes.

Jason took out his phone and showed it to them.

“A map program?” White Eagle asked.

“What are those icons?” Stanton asked.

  “Enemy RFID chips,” Jason said.

“The enemy is chipped?” White Eagle asked, his eyes getting wide.

“Yep, from the top person right down to the grunts,” Jason said. “That’s how we knew where they were.”

“What do you see at the reservation?” White Eagle asked.

Jason loaded the long-range app and moved over the reservation. “There.”

“That’s accurate,” Stanton said, looking up at Jason. “Most of them are dead. A few are prisoners.”

“What kind of range does this have?” White Eagle asked.

Jason moved the map to Dallas, and showed it to them. “We’ve got a big problem brewing in Dallas.”

“Holy shit,” White Eagle said. “Look at that, Stanton.”

“You think that’s something?” Jason asked. “Look at this.” He moved the map to Washington DC and showed it to them.

“Is that what I think it is?” Stanton asked.

“Yep, that’s what we’re dealing with in the Federal Government,” Jason said.

“Where did you get this?” White Eagle asked.

“It’s being developed by somebody on General Hogan’s team.”

“How come they don’t release this wide?” Stanton asked.

  “It’s incomplete,” Jason said.

“What, you mean the info can’t be counted on?” White Eagle asked.

“No, there’s information not included that we need to root the traitors out of our government. That’s what they’re working on now.”

“What kind of information?” Stanton asked.

“Name and rank, mainly,” Jason said.

“I can see why they’d want to wait for that,” White Eagle said.

“Yeah, me too,” Stanton said. “Are you saying that we can have access to this?”

“I’ll see if I can get permission for you two to have it on your phones. Even if they say no, you’ll still be with us. We’ll be working by this, and protecting ourselves with it.”

“Sounds fair enough,” White Eagle said.

  “Yes,” Stanton said.

“Okay, I’ll contact General Hogan’s people as soon as we’ve gotten our woman back,” Jason said. “I’d like to go help with that now, if you don’t mind.”

“Where are you guys staying?” Stanton asked.

“Up by Truth or Consequences,” Jason said. He pulled up the location on his phone and showed it to them.

“Okay, I know where that is,” Stanton said. “We’ll go back to the reservation for now. We need to deal with the Islamist prisoners.”

“Sounds good,” Jason said. “I’ll be on the apps all the time. If I see enemy fighters coming in your direction, I’ll let you know right away.”

“That would be great,” Stanton said. “Thank you.”

“Thank you for saving us,” Jason said.

“You’re welcome,” Stanton said. “Glad we’re working together.”

“Me too,” White Eagle said. “Sorry I was a stick in the mud at first.”

“I understand completely,” Jason said, extending his hand, which White Eagle shook. “It’s an honor to work with you.”

Jason watched as they walked back to their truck, and then rushed over to his Jeep, where Francis was waiting.

  “Ready?” Francis asked.

  “Yeah, let’s go,” Jason said.

Chapter 2 – Twisting the Knife

Curt roared through the desert on his Barracuda, one hand holding his phone, the other struggling with the wheel. The hurt he felt inside was like nothing he’d ever experienced. My Amanda. The icons were still on the screen, and he was approaching them quickly. He heard vehicles behin
d him, and suddenly Eric and Kim were alongside, bouncing along in the Bronco, Eric giving him a thumb up. Kim had her eyes on the screen of her phone. Junior and Rachel came up on his other flank, and Kelly with Brenda behind them. Kyle roared up behind him in his truck.

They were approaching a long ridge to their left, the trail they were on thinning, and then the icons stopped moving. The desert floor got rockier, squat plants here and there, the dirt a vivid red. A white van was dead ahead, parked a few hundred yards away, doors hanging open.

Eric hit the accelerator, flying forward in the Bronco, catching air as gunfire erupted from up the hill, peppering the ground but missing the flying vehicle. Eric made it to the van and got behind it, leaping out of the Bronco with his M-16, Kim racing behind him with the M60.

Curt turned left, racing to the hillside as bullets flew around him, getting close to the rocks and shutting down. He pulled his binoculars out of the compartment next to the driver’s seat and scurried to a position where he could look, his M-16 in hand. He was joined by Kelly and Brenda. Junior and Rachel roared over to the van, then went past it, the Islamists trying to hit them with rifle fire but missing.

Amanda was being held in front of an Islamist, a big knife to her neck. Several men were arguing in Arabic, and then the man with the knife yelled loud.

“Americans, I gut her like pig unless you let us leave.”

“Don’t listen to him,” Amanda yelled. “He’s scared shitless.”

One of the other Islamists rushed forward and punched Amanda in the jaw, almost causing her neck to get cut.

  “Don’t fight them,” Curt yelled.

“We kill her and then kill you,” another Islamist screamed. Then his forehead exploded, shot by Eric from behind the van. Several others returned fire, and Kim opened up with the M60, taking them down as the Islamist holding the knife looked on in horror.

“Hold your fire, dammit,” Curt shouted, rushing forward along the rocks, trying to get closer.

“Stop right now or I slit her throat,” the Islamist shouted, knife trembling in his hand.
